Madu Lebah & Penyakit HIV

KHASIAT MINYAK KELAPA DARA

1-Menyerupai lemak susu ibu.

5-Meningkatkan Metabolisma tubuh manusia

HIV / AIDS and Virgin Coconut Oil

"Initial trials have confirmed that coconut oil does have an anti-viral effect and can beneficially reduce the viral load of HIV patients", says Dr. Conrato S. Dayrit, Emeritus Professor of Pharmacology, University of the Philippines.
For full and complete information on research, recent publications, HIV/AIDS clinical trials, HIV/AIDS support protocols visit http://www.lauric.org/watson1.html
"A minimum of 50 ml of coconut oil would contain 20 to 25 grams of lauric acid, which indicates that the oil is metabolized in the body to release monolaurin which is an antibiotic and an antiviral agent. Among the saturated fatty acids, lauric acid has the maximum antiviral activity, he said. Based on this research, the first clinical trial using monolaurin as monotherapy on some of the HIV patients was conducted recently. Dr. Dayrit's conclusions after the study: "This initial trial confirmed the anecdotal reports that coconut oil does have an anti-viral effect and can beneficially reduce the viral load of HIV patients. The positive anti-viral action was seen not only with the monoglyceride of lauric acid but with coconut oil itself. This indicates that coconut oil is metabolized to monoglyceride forms of C-8, C-10, C- 12 to which it must owe its anti-pathogenic activity."
The entire results of Dr. Dayrit's study can be found here in PDF format.
"Health Oils from the Tree of Life (Nutritional and Health Aspects of Coconut Oil)" by Jon J. Kabara, PhD.
On July 19, 1995, Dr. Mary Enig, noted biochemist and nutritionist, was quoted in an article published in The HINDU, India’s National Newspaper as stating that coconut oil is converted by the body into “Monolaurin” a fatty acid with anti-viral properties that might be useful in the treatment of AIDS. The staff reporter for The HINDU wrote about Enig’s presentation at a press conference in Kochi and wrote the following:
“There was an instance in the US in which an infant tested HIV positive had become HIV negative. That it was fed with an infant formula with a high coconut oil content gains significance in this context and at present an effort was on to find out how the 'viral load' of an HIV infected baby came down when fed a diet that helped in the generation of Monolaurin in the body.”
The reporter commented on Enig’s observations that “Monolaurin helped in inactivating other viruses such as measles, herpes, vesicular stomatitis and Cytomegalovirus (CMV) and that research undertaken so far on coconut oil also indicated that it offered a certain measure of protection against cancer-inducing substances."
Enig stated in an article published in the Indian Coconut Journal, Sept., 1995 that Monolaurin, of which the precursor is lauric acid, disrupted the lipid membranes of envelope viruses and also inactivated bacteria, yeast and fungi. She wrote: “Of the saturated fatty acids, lauric acid has greater antiviral activity than either caprylic acid (C-10) or myristic acid (C-14). The action attributed to Monolaurin is that of solubilising the lipids ..in the envelope of the virus causing the disintegration of the virus envelope.”

Dr. Mary Enig has also written a book entitled "Nutrients and Foods in AIDS".
In a July 1997 newsletter entitled "Keep Hope Alive" an interview with Chris Dafoe was recorded. Chris Dafoe of Cloverdale, IN who, based on his lab numbers, thought the end was near in September, 1996. His HIV viral load was over 600,000, CD4 count was 10 and CD8 at 300. He prepaid his funeral and decided to take his last vacation in the jungles of South America with an Indian tribe in the Republic of Surinam. Around October 14, 1996, he began eating daily a dish of cooked coconut which was prepared by the local Indians. By Dec. 27th, 1996, a mere 2 and 1/2 months later, his viral load was at non-detectable levels and he had gained 32 lbs and was feeling great. He had some other people he knew with HIV try using coconuts in their diet, and they experienced the same results.  The entire interview can be found here.
Recently the PATA International-Potato and Products Aid Alliance To Africa committed to purchase and send several hundred container loads of Virgin Coconut Oil to Africa for distribution among HIV - AIDS sufferers. They state:
"AIDS is the modern day Black Plague. Millions have all ready died from this disease, leaving behind millions of orphans. Millions more will follow in death, unless a low cost way of controlling this illness is found quickly.
Several long term world studies sponsored by various health organizations have found that the high content of lauric acid in unrefined coconut oil can prolong the lives of AIDS patients by dissolving the covering of the virus itself. This same action has been found effective against other infectious, tropical based diseases as well."
If the results from the smaller studies duplicate themselves in the clinics in Africa, PATA intends to extend the distribution of Virgin Coconut oil in Africa.

Medical Herbalism: Clinical Articles and Case Studies

Immune - Garlic and AIDS
by Paul Bergner
Medical Herbalism 07-31-95 9(2/3): 17-18
Garlic appears to have a place in both in treating opportunistic infections and in improving the overall health of AIDS patients. Normally when a new AIDS therapy shows promise in a clinical trial, news spreads quickly in the media. This was unfortunately not the case after a dramatic, although small, trial of garlic for AIDS was reported at the International AIDS Conference in 1989. The researchers, who later published the information in Deutsche Zeitschrift Onkologie (German Journal of Oncology) gave an aged garlic preparation (Kyolic garlic) to ten patients with AIDS. All patients had severely low natural killer cell activity and abnormal helper-to-suppressor T-cell ratios — both of these are blood measurements of progressed AIDS, often indicating short life-expectancy. All patients also had opportunistic infections such as cryptosporidial diarrhea or herpes infections.
The patients received the equivalent of two cloves a day (5 grams) for the first six weeks, and then the equivalent of four cloves (10 grams) for another six weeks. Three of the patients were too severely ill to complete the trial. They could not complete the garlic regimen, and died before the trial ended.
The results were dramatic, and had it been a pharmaceutical drug involved instead of garlic, no doubt the news would have spread rapidly in the media. Six of the seven who completed the trial had normal natural-killer cell activity within six weeks, and all seven had normal activity by the end of the twelve weeks. Natural killer cell activity is considered one of the most important indicators of the progression of AIDS. The helper-to-suppressor T-cell ratios returned to normal in three of the patients, improved in two, remained the same in one, and lowered in one.
Just as important, the patients’ opportunistic infections also improved. Chronic diarrhea, candida infection, genital herpes, and a chronic sInus infection all improved. The patient with the chronic sinus infection had gained no relief from antibiotics during more than a year of treatment before the garlic trial.
Exactly why the garlic helped the patients so dramatically is not clearly understood. Garlic can affect the immune system in many ways. Garlic may have also strengthened immunity in these patients by helping to fight the opportunistic infections, and thus reducing the load on the immune system. Various trials have shown garlic to be effective against cryptococcus, cryptosporidia, herpes, mycobacteria, and pneumocystis — all common infectious agents in AIDS. Researchers have also recently found evidence that the garlic constituent ajoene may directly interfere with the spread of the HIV virus in AIDS patients.
This trial was small, with only seven patients completing it, and follow up studies are necessary to prove that garlic will really help AIDS patients. News of the trial spread like wildfire in the community of people with AIDS, however, and many patients now take garlic regularly. One study in 1993 found that nearly 10% of AIDS patients surveyed took garlic supplements in addition to the other medications they were taking.

Medical Herbalism: Clinical Articles and Case Studies

Garlic is used routinely in the Healing Aids Research Project at Bastyr University in Seattle. This is one of the few medical centers doing formal research into natural treatments of AIDS. Dr. Jane Guiltinan, medical director of the clinic where the research is done, suggests that all AIDS patient who can tolerate garlic should take it. “I most often prescribe garlic in food form rather than capsules or extracts,” says Guiltinan. “I have them eat as much as possible, either raw or cooked.”
Garlic is also an important part of the AIDS protocol at the Immune Enhancement Project (IEP)in Portland, Oregon, a clinic that treats about 140 AIDS patients each month. Doctors at the clinic treat the patients with acupuncture, Chinese massage, diet, and modified Chinese herbal formulas in a protocol followed in AIDS clinics in three other cities in the U.S. The main herbal therapy at the clinics for opportunistic infections is garlic. Dr. Subhuti Dharmananda, director of the project, recently published a scientific review of garlic entitled “Garlic As The Central Herb Therapy for AIDS.” AIDS patients at the IEP are encouraged to take 3-5 cloves of garlic a day to prevent the secondary infections in AIDS. If they already have the infections, they take that dose three times a day. Garlic is also given in other forms, such as retention enemas and skin washes, for certain conditions. They take the cloves cut up with lemon juice and honey, or in any other carrier than makes it more palatable. Dharmananda says that garlic probably does not effect the HIV infection itself, but treats the secondary infections that cause the most serious symptoms of AIDS.
AIDS patients might take garlic in any of its oral forms, use garlic poultices, compresses, or oil for skin afflictions, enemas for anal infections, or steams or chest applications for sinus or bronchial problems.

Tsai Y et.al “Antiviral properties of garlic: in vitro effects on influenza B, herpes simplex I, and coxsackie viruses.’ Plants Medics 1985:5:460-461

Plants do not have immune systems to defend themselves against the bacteria, fungi, viruses and yeasts that attack them. Their defense is direct chemical warfare. Their weapons are antibiotics, antivirals and fungicides that they manufacture internally. Their success is demonstrated by the fact that you see healthy growing plants everywhere.
In the case of garlic, one of the main active ingredients is a thiosulfinate compound called allicin. The manufacture of allicin is triggered by the release of enzymes by breaking the cell walls of the garlic plant. Allicin is the pungent, hot, stinky stuff that makes garlic special. In addition to allicin, garlic contains over 100 other beneficial nutrients. These include beta-carotene, folate, beta-sitosterol, ferulic acid, geraniol, oleanolic acid, P-coumaric acid, rutin, quercetin, thiamine, niacin, vitamin c, cysteine, zinc, calcium, magnesium, manganese, selenium, and others.
Garlic is an Anti-biotic and Anti-viral
In vitro (in laboratory cultures) studies demonstrate that garlic has antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal activity. In one Clinical study, one capsule daily of an allicin-containing garlic supplement was tested on a group of 146 volunteers (Josling P 2001). Over several months half the group received the garlic while the other half got a placebo. The placebo group had 63 percent more common cold infections than the garlic group. In addition, those in the garlic group who did catch a cold had symptoms for an average of only 1.52 days, compared with 5.01 days for the placebo group. The doctors who conducted this garlic study concluded, "An allicin-containing supplement can prevent attack by the common cold virus."
Garlic in Herpes Virus Infections
While garlic has demonstrated in vitro anti-viral activity against many viruses including HSV-1 and HSV-2, clinical trials on humans have not been performed. Garlic's in vitro success against these viruses and its demonstrated in vivo effectiveness against the common cold virus suggests that it may be effective against the herpes viruses in humans as well. However, this hypothesis has not been clinically tested and, until it is, such claims cannot be made.
Garlic Lowers Blood Pressure
There is some evidence that garlic is mildly hypotensive in humans. Researchers at the University of Mississippi and in Turkey performed clinical tests on the effectiveness of garlic in reducing blood pressure. They found that garlic reduced systolic blood pressure by at least 9 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure by at least 5 mmHg. The effect was most noted in subjects with high blood pressure and high cholesterol. No hypotensive effect was observed in patients with normal blood pressure.
Garlic for Lowering Cholesterol
There is contradictory evidence as to whether garlic actually lowers cholesterol and triglyceride levels or not. The contradictions appear to arise from the use of different dosages, forms of garlic and other procedural differences. However, most findings showed that garlic slightly lowered blood cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglycerides with a consistent lowering of blood lipids seen in studies that used aged garlic extract (kyolic) as the supplement.
Research has demonstrated that garlic inhibits the peroxidation of lipids. This, in turn, prevents LDL cholesterol from being oxidized into harmful compounds. Garlic also lowers homocysteine levels. Recent research has identified homocysteine as a major culprit in heart disease, osteoporosis, alzheimers and several other degenerative diseases.
Garlic in Atherosclerosis
Garlic reduces platelet aggregation, thrombin formation, platelet adhesion to fibrinogen and the risk of thrombosis. Garlic's effects are attributed to allicin, ajoene, and other organosulfur constituents in the herb. A recent study on garlic confirms that it exhibits powerful fibrinolytic activity both in vitro and in vivo. In this study, it acted as an anticoagulant by downregulating thrombin formation. These effects reduce the formation of atherosclerotic plaque.
In one study, patients with atherosclerosis had higher plasma levels of the oxidant MDA ( malondialdehyde ) and lower plasma levels of the antioxidant enzyme glutathione peroxidase compared to the control group. However, those patients who consumed 1 ml/kg of garlic extract had significantly lowered MDA levels even in the absence of changes in antioxidant enzyme activities. In addition, the researchers found the presence of oxidant stress in blood samples from atherosclerosis patients, but ingesting garlic extract prevented oxidation reactions by eliminating this oxidant stress.
Garlic and Men's Health
Garlic may reduce the risk of prostate cancer, according to a recent study. Researchers surveyed 238 men with prostate cancer and 471 healthy controls in Shanghai, China to determine their eating habits. The risk of prostate cancer declined by more than 33 percent in men who consumed small amounts of onions, garlic, scallions, shallots and leeks each day. Men who consumed 2 grams of garlic daily experienced a 50 percent decease in prostate cancer risk.
Another study done with rats demonstrated that garlic supplementation in combination with a high protein diet increased testosterone levels.
Anti-Cancer Properties of Garlic
Modern epidemiological studies, well correlated with laboratory investigations, corroborate the evidence that higher intake of garlic and its relatives is correlated with reduced risk of several cancers. The mechanisms proposed to explain the cancer-preventive effects of garlic include inhibition of tumor mutagenesis, modulation of enzyme activities, and effects on cell proliferation and tumor growth. Several garlic compounds, including allicin, induce apoptosis (programmed cell death) in various malignant human cells. These include breast, colorectal, hepatic, prostate, and lymphoma cells. A growing number of clinical studies are examining the properties of ajoene, one of the major components of purified garlic. Researchers are investigating ajoene in part because it is more chemically stable than allicin. The list of cancers responding to garlic treatment or supplementation continues to grow.
Garlic Dosage
People who wish to consume garlic and have no aversion to its odor can chew from one to two whole cloves of raw garlic daily. In certain regions of China up to eight cloves of raw garlic are consumed per day. For those who prefer it with less odor, enteric-coated tablets or capsules with approximately 1.3% allacin are available. Clinical trials have used 600-900 mg (delivering approximately 5-6 mg of allicin ) per day in two or three divided amounts. Aged-garlic extracts have been studied in amounts ranging from 2.4-7.2 grams per day.
Garlic Side Effects and Drug Interactions
Garlic has anti-coagulant properties. Anyone with a bleeding disorder or taking anti-coagulant or anti-platlett medications should consult their doctor before consuming garlic. Examples of such medications include indomethacin, dipyridamole, and aspirin. Anyone anticipating surgery, child birth, etc. should avoid garlic.
Garlic may lower blood sugar considerably and may potentize the effect of certain anti-diabetic medications. Medications from this class include chlorpropamide, glimepiride, and glyburide. When using garlic with these medications, blood sugars must be followed closely and garlic use should be used under your doctor's advise.
Garlic may reduce blood levels of protease inhibitors. Protease Inhibitors are a class of drugs used to treat people with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). They include indinavir, ritinavir, and saquinavir.
It is hhypothesized by some that garlic may behave similarly to a class of cholesterol lowering medications called statins and to a class of blood pressure lowering medications called ACE inhibitors. Examples of these medications include atorvastatin, pravastatin, lovastatin, enalapril, captopril, and lisinopril. Possible interactions with these medications has not been tested.
Other side effects from garlic may include upset stomach, bloating, bad breath, and body odor.
Garlic is considered to have very low toxicity and is listed as Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the United States.
More research with better-designed studies is needed in order to fully assess the safety and effectiveness of garlic and to determine the most appropriate dose and form.

Black Seeds

"A cure for every disease except death." (Sahih Bukhari)

Black seed, Black cumin, Nigella sativa, Kalonji, Schwarzcummel, sinouj, Nutmeg flower, Black caraway, Habba sowda, fennel flower...
Black seed (Nigella sativa) is considered to be one of the greatest healing herbs of all times. This herb has been used for millenniums to strengthen the immune system, cleanse the body, purify the blood, protect against irritants and support healthy longevity. Long forgotten this herb is now enjoying a positive and welcomed come-back.

What is Black Seed?

An annual herbaceous plant, black seed (Nigella sativa) is believed to be indigenous to the Mediterranean region but has been cultivated into other parts of the world including Saudi Arabia, northern Africa and parts of Asia.
Tiny and hairy, being no more than 3mm in length, black seed originates from the common fennel flower plant (Nigella sativa) of the buttercup (Ranunculaceae) family. Nigella sativa is sometimes mistakenly confused with the fennel herb plant (Foeniculum vulgare).
The plant has finely divided foliage and pale bluish purple or white flowers. The flowers grow terminally on its branches while the leaves grow opposite each other in pairs, on either side of the stem. Its lower leaves are small and petiole, and the upper leaves are long (6-10cm). The stalk of the plant reaches a height of twelve to eighteen inches as its fruit, the black seed, matures.
Nigella sativa reproduces with itself and forms a fruit capsule which consists of many white trigonal seeds. Once the fruit capsule has matured, it opens up and the seeds contained within are exposed to the air, becoming black in color (black seeds).
Nigella sativa and its black seed are known by other names, varying between places. Some call it black caraway, others call it black cumin (Kalonji), or even coriander seeds. In English, the Nigella sativa plant is commonly referred to as "Love in a Mist". Nevertheless, this is Nigella sativa, which has been known and used from ancient times and is also known in Persian as Shonaiz.
The most pertinent point to be made about black seed is that it should be regarded as part of an overall holistic approach to health and ideally should be incorporated into one's everyday lifestyle. In this way, the many nutritional and healing properties contained in the seed can help build the body's immune system over time, supplying it with the optimum resources it needs to help prevent and fight illness.

History of the Black Seed

Nigella sativa was discovered in Tutankhamen's tomb, implying that it played an important role in ancient Egyptian practices. Although its exact role in Egyptian culture is not known, we do know that items entombed with a king were carefully selected to assist him in the afterlife.
The earliest written reference to black seed is found in the book of Isaiah in the Old Testament. Isaiah contrasts the reaping of black cumin with wheat: For the black cumin is not threshed with a threshing sledge, nor is a cart wheel rolled over the cumin, but the black cumin is beaten out with a stick, and the cumin with a rod. (Isaiah 28:25,27 NKJV). Easton's Bible Dictionary clarifies that the Hebrew word for black cumin, "ketsah," refers to "without doubt the Nigella sativa, a small annual of the order Ranunculaceae which grows wild in the Mediterranean countries, and is cultivated in Egypt and Syria for its seed."
Dioscoredes, a Greek physician of the 1st century, recorded that black seeds were taken to treat headaches, nasal congestion, toothache, and intestinal worms. They were also used, he reported, as a diuretic to promote menstruation and increase milk production.
The Muslim scholar al-Biruni (973-1048), who composed a treatise on the early origins of Indian and Chinese drugs, mentions that the black seed is a kind of grain called alwanak in the Sigzi dialect. Later, this was confirmed by Suhar Bakht who explained it to be habb-i-Sajzi (viz. Sigzi grains). This reference to black seed as "grains" points to the seed's possible nutritional use during the tenth and eleventh centuries.
In the Greco-Arab/Unani-Tibb system of medicine, which originated from Hippocrates, his contemporary Galen and Ibn Sina, black seed has been regarded as a valuable remedy in hepatic and digestive disorders and has been described as a stimulant in a variety of conditions, ascribed to an imbalance of cold humours.
Ibn Sina (980-1037), most famous for his volumes called "The Canon of Medicine," regarded by many as the most famous book in the history of medicine, East or West, refers to black seed as the seed "that stimulates the body's energy and helps recovery from fatigue or disspiritedness."
Black seed is also included in the list of natural drugs of Al-Tibb al-Nabawi, and, according to tradition, "Hold onto the use of the black seed for it has a remedy for every illness except death." This prophetic reference in describing black seed as "having a remedy for all illnesses" may not be so exaggerated as it at first appears. Recent research has provided evidence which indicates that black seed contains an ability to significantly boost the human immune system - if taken over time. The prophetic phrase, "hold onto the use of the seed," also emphasizes consistent usage of the seed.
Black seed has been traditionally and successfully used in the Middle and Far East countries for centuries to treat ailments including bronchial asthma and bronchitis, rheumatism and related inflammatory diseases, to increase milk production in nursing mothers, to treat digestive disturbances, to support the body's immune system, to promote digestion and elimination, and to fight parasitic infestation. Its oil has been used to treat skin conditions such as eczema and boils and is used topically to treat cold symptoms.
The many uses of black seed has earned for this medicinal herb the Arabic approbation habbatul barakah, meaning "the seed of blessing."

Primary Properties of the Black Seed

As the evidence presented in this section will show, it is quite probable that as medical science increasingly learns more about black seed, one or more of its more active ingredients may become combined into a pharmacy prescription for specific conditions. In the event that this does occur, it is also likely that this particular extract of black seed will be chemically compounded and thus become a more potent medicine.
While it may be argued that chemical additives may increase black seed's effectiveness in treating specific conditions, the healing principles of black seed in its pure, natural form should also be taken into account.
Black seed, in its complete, natural form, acts on the principle of assisting the body's own natural healing process in overcoming illness or maintaining health. It works on the part or system of the body affected without disturbing its natural balance elsewhere.
The effect of black seed's combined nutitrional and medicinal value is that not only does it help relieve the current condition at hand, but also helps the body build further resistance against future ailments or disease.
While historical evidence suggests black seed's potential use for a wide variety of ailments, we have limited our descriptions of its primary healing properties here to the most recent research findings on black seed.

How Does Black Seed Benefit?

The majority of our health problems have the same causes- infection by micro-organisms such as bacteria, viruses, parasites and fungi. When using clinical (allopathic medicines) each symptom is treated individually and usually with synthetic chemically manufactured medicines that contain alcohol and other harmful ingredients. Black seed is effective at treating the body as a whole and fights the actual cause of the symptoms. Black seed regulates too weak or too strong reactions of the immune system and is excellent for treating chronic, allergic and hormonal diseases. It uses are many as well as its benefit. Black seed support metabolism, improve digestion, and lowers blood sugar levels. It is used to dispel worms and parasites from intestinal track. It is useful in soothing bronchitis and coughs, increase body tone, stimulates menstrual periods, increases the flow of breast milk, provides quick energy, increases sperm count, calms the nervous system, encourages hair growth and retards hair fall out, prevents skin wrinkling, and much more.

How is Black Seed Used?

Black seed can be used in many ways. As a dietary supplement we recommend one teaspoon once or twice a day. the correct dosage is dependent on whether you are using it for prevention or treatment of acute problems. In one particular study in Munich, 600 allergy patients were given 500mg of black seed oil twice a day for 3 months. A clear improvement was observed in 85% of the patients. The oil can be mixed into any cold liquid or yogurt. It can also be applied topically for arthritis, eczema, psoriasis, and scalp ointment. The herb can be mixed with any hot or cold beverage or food. It can be used as a spice in vegetable or meat recipes. Click on our uses & recipes page The benefits are obtained through whichever way you choose.

Is Black Seed Ayurveda Medicine?

We consider Back seed Prophetic Medicine since it was recommended by the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be Upon Him) over 1400 years ago. He in his divine wisdom said "Use this Black seed, it has a cure for every disease except death.Although Black seed does follow the Ayurveda theory with respect to the bitter alkaloid component, nigelline. According to the Ayurveda Theory bitter components work cooling, light and dry; after consumption they are sharp. It lowers fever, cleanses and dries excretions out. It gives tone to tissue and strengthens it, and even helps by skin irritations. It stimulates the appetite and metabolism and helps digestive problems. Bitter components also make it possible to eliminate excess acids

Why is Black Seed Considered a Universal Remedy?

The Prophet Muhammad (Peace be Upon Him) said in his divine wisdom about the Black seed
"Use this Black seed, it has a cure for every disease except death". (Sahih Bukhari)
Black seed unquestionably has a positive and stabilizing effect on the human immune system which . Moreover, since diseases are the result of defective immune systems, it is fair to assume that the beneficial effects go beyond skin disorders and allergies. Since the immune system has a direct or indirect effect on all the systems of the body, when you are infected by any disease, the power of the immunity system affects the cure of this disease.

Are There Any Side Effects?

Black seed is a safe and effective herb that can be used by almost anyone. No irritations or side effects are caused when the right dose is correctly applied. Its benefits are obtained through consistent use,the effects are medium to long term. Diabetes is useful in the treatment of diabetes mellitus or diabetes caused by an allergy. However it is recommended that the treatment be supervises because Black seed does lower blood sugar levels. Black seed should not be taken by pregnant women if their wombs are sensitive (Many Muslim women take it while pregnant and no harm has been found.  I, Asma Rice, personally have taken it in all of my pregnancies without any harm, Alhamdulillah).

What Are Some Nutritional Components?

Black seed contains over 100 valuable nutrients. It contains about 21% protein, 38% carbohydrates and 35% plant fats and oils. The contents are similar to evening primrose oil, but because of its complex composition, it is much stronger. The active ingredients of black seed are Thymoquinone, Nigellone, and Fixed oils. it also contains in significant proportions protein, Carbohydrates and Essential fatty acids. Other ingredients include Linoleic acid, Oleic acid, Calcium, Potassium, Iron, Zinc, Magnesium, Selenium, Vitamin A, vitamin B, vitamin B2,Niacin, and Vitamin C.

Has There Been Any Scientific Reserach Done?

There has been numerous on going research on the effects of Black seed since 1959. Research carried out at major international universities and articles published in various scientific journals documenting the astonishing results of the Black seed. In 1960, Egyptian researchers confirmed that Nigellone was responsible for Black seeds broncho-dilating effect. Scientists in Germany have confirmed the anti-bacterial and antimycotic effects of black seed oil. Scientist sat the Cancer and Immuno-Biological Laboratory have found that Black seed stimulates bone marrow and immune cells and raises the interferon production, protects normal cells against cell destroying effects of viruses, destroys tumor cells and raises the number of anti- bodies producing B cells. U.S researchers have written the world wide first report on the anti-tumor affects of Black seed oil. Its title "Study of the Effects of Nigella sativa on Humans".

Should I Take the Oil of the Herb?

Both are effective in their own right..

Do I Have to Be Sick to Take Black Seed?

Absolutely not! Nowadays because our food is more and more denaturalized, our bodies are full of free radicals which produce cancer. The essential fatty acids in black seed bind the free radicals and eliminate them. Since our bodies are not able to synthesize thereby making Black seed an important addition to our diet. Black seed also contains beta carotene, which is known to destroy cell damaging substances which produce cancer.

Black Seed is Rich in Nutritional Values.

Monosaccharides (single molecule sugars) in the form of glucose, rhamnose, xylose, and arabinose are found in the black seed.
The black seed contains a non-starch polysaccharide component which is a useful source of dietary fiber.
It is rich in fatty acids, particularly the unsaturated and essential fatty acids (Linoleic and Linoleic acid). Essential fatty acids cannot be manufactured by the body alone, and therefore we acquire these from food.
Fifteen amino acids make up the protein content of the black seed, including eight of the nine essential amino acids. Essential amino acids cannot be synthesized within our body in sufficient quantities and are thus required from our diet.
Black seed contains Arginine which is essential for infant growth.
Chemical analysis has further revealed that the black seed contains carotene, which is converted by the liver into vitamin A, the vitamin known for its anti-cancer activity.
The black seed is also a source of calcium, iron, sodium, and potassium. Required only in small amounts by the body, these elements' main function is to act as essential cofactors in various enzyme functions.
2. Immune System Strengthening
Studies begun just over a decade ago suggest that if used on an ongoing basis, black seed can play an important role to enhance human immunity, particularly in immunocompromise patients.
In 1986, Drs. El-Kadi and Kandil conducted a study with human volunteers to test the efficiency of black seed as a natural immune enhancer. The first group of volunteers received black seed capsules (1 gram twice daily) for four weeks and the second group were given a placebo. A complete lymphocyte count carried out in all volunteers before and four weeks after administration of black seed and the placebo revealed that the majority of subjects who took black seed displayed a 72% increase in helper to suppresser T-cells ratio, as well as an increase in natural killer cell functional activity. The control group who received the placebo experienced a net decline in ratio of 7%. They reported, "These findings may be of great practical significance since a natural immune enhancer like the black seed could play an important role in the treatment of cancer, AIDS, and other disease conditions associated with immune deficiency states."
These results were confirmed by a study published in the Saudi Pharmaceutical Journal in 1993 by Dr. Basil Ali and his colleagues from the College of Medicine at Kin Faisal University.
In the field of AIDS research specifically, tests carried out by Dr. Haq on human volunteers at the Department of Biological and Medical Research Center in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (1997) showed that black seed enhanced the ratio between helper T-cells and suppresser T-cells by 55% with a 30% average enhancement of the natural killer (NK) cell activity.
3. Anti-histamine activity
Histamine is a substance released by bodily tissues, sometimes creating allergic reactions and is associated with conditions such as bronchial asthma.
In 1960, scientists Badr-El-Din and Mahfouz found that dimer dithymoquinone isolated from black seed's volatile oil, under the name of "Nigellone," and given by mouth to some patients suffering from bronchial asthma, suppressed the symptoms of the condition in the majority of patients.
Following the results of this early study, crystalline nigellone was administered to children and adults in the treatment of bronchial asthma with effective results and no sign of toxicity. It was observed, however, that although effective, crystalline nigellone displayed a delayed reaction.
In 1993, Nirmal Chakravarty, M.D., conducted a study to see if this delay could be attributed to the possibility of crystalline nigellone being an inhibitory agent on histamine. His hypothesis proved correct. Dr. Chakravarty's study found that the actual mechanism behind the suppressive effect of crystalline nigellone on histamine is that crystalline nigellone inhibits protein kinase C, a substance known to trigger the release of histamine. In addition, his study showed that crystalline nigellone decreased the uptake of calcium in mast cells, which also inhibits histamine release.
The importance of these results are that people who suffer from bronchial asthma and other allergic diseases may benefit from taking crystalline nigellone.
4. Anti-tumor principles
A study of black seed's potential anti-tumor principles by the Amala Research Center in Amala Nagar, Kerala (India) in 1991 lent further impetus to Dr. Chakravarty's suggestion for the possible use of black seed in the treatment of cancer.
Using an active principle of fatty acids derived from black seed, studies with Swiss albino mice showed that this active principle could completely inhibit the development of a common type of cancer cells called Ehrlich ascites carcinoma (EAC). A second common type of cancer cells, Dalton's lymphoma ascites (DLA) cells were also used.
Mice which had received the EAC cells and black seed remained normal without any tumor formation, illustrating that the active principle was 100% effective in preventing EAC tumor development.
Results in mice who received DLA cells and black seed showed that the active principle had inhibited tumor development by 50% less compared to mice not given the active principle.
The study concluded, "It is evident that the active principle isolated from nigella sativa seeds is a potent anti-tumor agent, and the constituent long chain fatty acid may be the main active component."
5. Anti-bacterial
In 1989, a report appeared in the Pakistan Journal of Pharmacy about anti-fungal properties of the volatile oil of black seed. 1992 saw researchers at the Department of Pharmacy, University of Dhaka, Bangladesh, conducting a study in which the antibacterial activity of the volatile oil of black seed was compared with five antibiotics: ampicillin, tetracycline, cotrimoxazole, gentamicin, and nalidixic acid.
The oil proved to be more effective against many strains of bacteria, including those known to be highly resistant to drugs: V. cholera, E. coli (a common infectious agent found in undercooked meats), and all strains of Shigella spp., except Shigella dysentriae. Most strains of Shigella have been shown to rapidly become resistant to commonly used antibiotics and chemotheraputic agents.
In light of the above research findings, it is of interest that homeopaths have long been known to make a tincture from the black seed for digestive and bowel complaints. Traditionally, the black seed is still used to help relieve vomiting and diarrhea, as well as flatulent colic, and to help counteract the griping action of purgatives (e.g. certain laxatives, fruits such as apricots when over consumed).
6. Anti-inflammatory
As early as 1960, Professor El-Dakhakny reported that black seed oil has an anti-inflammatory effect and that it could be useful for relieving the effects of arthritis.
In 1995, a group of scientists at the Pharmacology Research Laboratories, Department of Pharmacy, Kings College, Lond, decided to test the effectiveness of the fixed oil of Nigella sativa and its derivative, thymoquinine, as an anti-inflammatory agent. Their study found that the oil inhibited eicosanoid generation and demonstrated anti-oxidant activity in cells.
The inhibition of eicasanoid generation, however, was higher than could be expected from thymoquinone alone. Their study suggested that other compounds within the oil might also be responsible for the enhanced anti-inflammatory reactions in cells.
The scientists speculated that the unusual C20:2 unsaturated fatty acids contained in black seed were possibly responsible for boosting the oil's effectiveness.
In 1997, studies conducted at the Microbiological Unit of the Research Center, College of Pharmacy, King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, found that externally in an ointment form, the anti-inflammatory activity of the black seed was found to be in the same range as that of other similar commercial products. The tests also demonstrated that the black seed is non-allergenic.
7. Promotes lactation
A study by Agarwhal (1979) showed that black seed oil increases the milk output of breastfeeding mothers.
A literature search by the University of Potchefstroom (1989), including biological abstracts, revealed that black seed's capacity to increase the milk flow of nursing mothers could be attributed to a combination of lipid portion and hormonal structures found in the black seed.

KHASIAT PERIA KATAK

Peria
Kini, penggunaan peria semakin meluas.

Bitter Melon: Why A Simple Fruit Extract Could Be Set To Replace Conventional Drugs For Treating Diabetes
When HSI Panellist, Paula Bartimeus, first told us about Bitter Melon - hailed as a potential breakthrough in the treatment of chronic diseases such as diabetes, HIV/AIDs and even cancer - we found it hard to believe that a simple fruit could exert such far-reaching health benefits.
However, the mounting research into bitter melon's unique therapeutic properties appears to be yet another testament to the advantages of certain natural therapies over many conventional drugs. In India, for example, doctors are so confident about the anti-diabetic effect of bitter melon that it is often dispensed in hospitals to people suffering from diabetes in place of medication.
Conventional drugs are often limited to treating just one specific condition, whereas natural remedies - because of the complex array of biochemicals, vitamins and minerals they contain - are remarkably versatile and able to provide relief for a wide range of unrelated conditions. In bitter melon, for example, there are 32 active ingredients - which are thought to aid recovery from viral infections, improve digestion and stimulate poor appetite too.
Unripe fruit extract responsible for bitter melon's potent health-giving propertiesThe bitter melon plant (Momordica charantia) can be found growing in tropical locations such as East Africa, Asia, The Caribbean and South America - where its fruit is used both as a medicine and a food. Bitter melon is a member of the Cucurbitaceae family - a relative of squash, watermelon and cucumber - and as the name suggests, it tastes bitter.
Also known as balsam pear, bitter melon is cucumber shaped with a pebbly surface. As it begins to mature, its surface colour turns from light green to yellow or orange. However, it is the extract from the unripe fruit that provides the plant with its therapeutic properties.
At least 32 active constituents have been identified in bitter melon so far, including beta-sitosterol-d-glucoside, citrulline, GABA, lutein, lycopene and zeaxanthin. Nutritional analysis reveals that bitter melon is also rich in potassium, calcium, iron, beta-carotene, vitamins B1, B2, B3 and C.
Even more effective than a conventional drug in lowering blood sugar!Recently, the Department of Health in the Philippines has recommended bitter melon as one of the best herbal medicines for diabetic management. And multiple clinical studies have clearly established the role of bitter melon in people with diabetes.1 Scientists have now identified three groups of constituents that are thought to be responsible for its 'blood sugar lowering' action.
One of these, a compound called charantin, which is composed of mixed steroids, was found to be more effective than the oral hypoglycaemic drug, tolbutamide, in reducing blood sugar.
Another, an insulin-like polypeptide, called polypeptide P, appears to lower blood sugar in type I (insulin dependent) diabetics, while alkaloids present in the fruit have also been noted to have a blood sugar lowering effect. As yet, researchers are unclear as to which of these compounds is most effective or if it is the synergistic effect of all three. Further research is required to understand how these compounds actually work.
Compounds known as oleanolic acid glycosides have been found to improve glucose tolerance in Type II (maturity onset) diabetics by preventing the absorption of sugar from the intestines. Bitter melon has also been reported to increase the number of beta cells (cells that secrete insulin) in the pancreas, thereby improving your body's capability to produce insulin (insulin promotes the uptake of sugar from your blood by cells and tissues).
In one study, glucose tolerance was improved in 73 per cent of type II diabetics given 2oz of bitter melon juice. 2 In another study, 15 grams of the aqueous extract of bitter melon produced a 54 per cent decrease in post-prandial (occurring after eating) blood sugar in six patients. 3
A natural therapy for the management of AIDs and HIV?In the USA and Asia there has been much interest in bitter melon for its use as an alternative therapy for AIDs. A protein called MAP 30 isolated from the fruit is a potent inhibitor of HIV activity.
Professor Sylvia Lee-Huang and researchers at the New York University School of Medicine reported that MAP 30 protein is able to slow down HIV-1 infection in T-lymphocytes and monocytes (white blood cells) as well as replication of HIV-1 in infected cells. 4
And, unlike many other alternative anti-HIV treatments, the compound has been shown to be non-toxic to uninfected cells. Although research is very much in its early stages, two other proteins present in the seeds of the bitter melon, alpha- and beta-momorcharin, have also been found to inhibit the AIDs virus. 5
Bitter melon may prove to have general anti-viral properties too. A seed extract has been shown to deter herpes virus-1 in human cells. 6 While anti-cancer properties are present in a crude extract of the fruit. 4

How to take bitter melon for maximum resultsDue to its bitter taste, you may prefer to take bitter melon in tincture or capsule form. The suggested dose for bitter melon tincture is approximately 5ml - two to three times a day. The dosage for capsules will depend on the strength of the product, and may vary from brand to brand - always follow instructions on the product's label.
